About the coordinate converter
This free coordinate converter translates a single location between the four formats GIS professionals use most: Decimal Degrees (DD), Degrees-Minutes-Seconds (DMS), UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) and MGRS (Military Grid Reference System). It is ideal for surveyors, drone pilots, geocachers and developers who receive coordinates in one notation but need another.
How to use it
- Enter a latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (e.g.
48.8584, 2.2945). - Press Convert (or Enter) โ the DMS, UTM and MGRS equivalents appear instantly.
- Use Paste & detect to pull a "lat, lng" pair straight from your clipboard.
Frequently asked questions
What datum does this use?
All conversions assume WGS84, the datum used by GPS and most web mapping. UTM and MGRS results are computed on the WGS84 ellipsoid.
What's the difference between UTM and MGRS?
UTM gives a zone plus easting/northing in metres. MGRS builds on UTM but adds a 100 km grid-square letter pair and a single combined coordinate string, which is more compact for field use.
Why does MGRS show "n/a" near the poles?
MGRS (and UTM) are undefined in the polar regions beyond roughly 80ยฐ S and 84ยฐ N, where the UPS grid is used instead.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser โ nothing is uploaded.
