About the map measuring tool

Measure real-world distance, area and perimeter by clicking points directly on the map. Distances and areas are calculated geodesically on the WGS84 ellipsoid, so they stay accurate over long spans and at any latitude โ€” unlike naive pixel measurements.

How to use it

  1. Choose Distance (a path) or Area (a polygon).
  2. Click the map to drop points; the running total updates live.
  3. Switch between metric and imperial units at any time.
  4. Use Undo point or Clear to correct mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is it?

Calculations use great-circle / geodesic math, accurate to within a fraction of a percent for typical distances. Map clicks are limited by how precisely you can place the cursor at the current zoom.

What units can I get?

Metric: metres, kilometres, hectares and kmยฒ. Imperial: feet, miles, acres and miยฒ.
